Mass finishing can economically enhance the utility, attractiveness, and value of the metal, plastic, ceramic or other parts manufactured for industrial or consumer use.  Mass finishing processes improve surface properties, upgrade product quality, and enhance the image of the manufacturing industry.  Edge, corner, surface finishing, including the removal of burrs, defects, and sharp edges improves part appearance and handling safety, and prepares surfaces for subsequent coating. Other benefits include easier assembly, improved operating performance, increased strength (in part by the elimination of surface stress concentrations), and longer product life. By imparting compressive stresses to the surfaces, fatigue strength can be improved. Hands-Free Finishing of AM/3DP Metal Parts with High-Speed Centrifugal Iso-Finishing

Hands-Free Finishing of AM/3DP Metal Parts with High-Speed Centrifugal Iso-Finishing

Centrifugal Isotropic Finishing has been shown to be useful in reducing the rough surfaces common to 3D printed parts.  In this blog post is an example of surface finishes that can be achieved with the method.  The slides provide profilometric and areal data tabulated by Jack Clark, President of Surface Analytics. HZ High Energy series Centrifugal Barrel Finishing (CBF) systems are the fastest and most economical form of finishing machine available. They are the industry workhorse in polishing, deburring and deflashing parts. Continue reading Right-Sizing your Centrifugal Isotropic Finishing Equipment

Are you still hand-deburring your machined parts? Do you need to be doing that? Are you sure?

Are you still hand-deburring your machined parts? Do you need to be doing that? Are you sure?

a great many parts are being hand-deburred currently because the conventional mass finishing method(s) being used in the shop are incapable of exerting sufficient abrasive media pressure against edges and surfaces to remove unwanted and undesirable projections, sharp edges and burrs.  In many cases, it is possible to minimize hand-deburring procedures by utilizing a higher energy method that makes use of centrifugal force to propel abrasive material and rub away at edges and surfaces with dramatically more strength.   Continue reading Are you still hand-deburring your machined parts? Hand deburring and manual polishing is the bane of many machine shop’s and machining department’s existence.  The same is true of parts manufactured with 3D printing technology.  What can be done to minimize the need for these tedious, time-consuming, labor-intensive production bottlenecks?  In many cases, the need for hand-deburring or surface finishing operations can be reduced greatly with high-energy and high-intensity isotropic finishing operations.  See below several examples below where laborious deburring procedures have been reduced, minimized or eliminated. Hands-Free, High-Speed Small Part Finishing with Centrifugal Iso-Finishing Technology

Hands-Free, High-Speed Small Part Finishing with Centrifugal Iso-Finishing Technology

High-energy centrifugal finishing methods were originally developed for ultra-smoothing and fine finishing of smaller precision parts. The high energy momentum of abrasive and polishing materials within these systems permitted the use of smaller dimensioned media that could access fine features and intricate geometries of some smaller parts. In these types of operations, several different cycles using successively finer abrasive materials are used to produce very fine finishes, in some cases as low as one micro-inch Ra. This type of finishing is used for both decorative/cosmetic effects and for producing functional finishes to improve performance and service life of parts in a wide variety of demanding industrial applications.
